Osteoarthritis Leaflets

Osteoarthritis Guidebook Short Version

This is a shorter version of the osteoarthritis guidebook and is a useful quick reference guide to understand more about osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis and You, there are things we can do - explaining osteoarthritis

This leaflet explains what osteoarthritis is and how people can manage it.
It has been created by researchers and people with osteoarthritis. There is also an accompanying animation, which you will find in the osteoarthritis animation section of this website.

If you want to comment on this leaflet to make it better, please fill in our brief survey here

This project was funded by the NIHR Research For Patient Benefit Programme (PB-PG-0817-20031) and NIHR Applied Research Collaboration West Midlands. The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.

Keele Pain Recorder App

The Keele Pain Recorder (KPR) is a mobile application (app) which was developed by patients for patients.

The app has undergone clinical trials and been subject to scientific evaluation. It records your level of pain, how this interferes with your life, mood, and sleep on a daily or weekly basis. It records how medication is helping your condition, or if you experience side effects. This can be shared with your doctor to help treat your condition via Email or through the app itself.

With support from the West Midlands Academic Health Science Network (WMASHN)(http://www.wmahsn.org/) and Stoke-on-Trent Clinical Commissioning Group (https://www.stokeccg.nhs.uk/) the KPR is freely available to all pain sufferers.

Download via Google Play or on the Apple app store by clicking on the box below.

And describes its benefits for patients managing pain

Osteoarthritis Quality Indicators

These Quality Indicators for osteoarthritis were developed by UK and Norway researchers and patients.

Free Clinician Training

Free training for clinicians is available for pharmacists, general practice nursing and First Contact Physiotherapists. Please click on the following links to access the training:

Pharmacist Training

This training programme will equip Pharmacists and pharmacy staff to support the implementation of the NICE guidelines on core treatments for Osteoarthritis, including:

  • A clear understanding of Osteoarthritis
  • Exploring patients’ health beliefs and the impact of Osteoarthritis on a patient’s life
  • Giving patients a clear explanation of Osteoarthritis
  • Advising on pain relief, exercise and weight management and providing good written information and other resources
  • Supporting self-management through goal-setting and review

General Practice and Advanced Practice Nursing

This course is split into 5 sections of between 5 and 10 minutes duration. This training programme will equip primary care nurses to support the implementation of the NICE guidelines on core treatments for osteoarthritis.

The objectives are to:

  • Have a clear understanding of osteoarthritis
  • Understand how osteoarthritis and condition beliefs can impact an individual’s life and behaviour
  • Be able to confidently make a diagnosis and explain osteoarthritis
  • Be able to advise on evidence-based pain relief, exercise and weight management and provide good written information and signposting to other resources
  • Consider potential opportunities for further Advanced Nurse Practitioner skill development

First Contact Physiotherapists

This course is split into 5 sections of between 5 and 10 minutes duration.

This training programme will equip first contact physiotherapists to support the implementation of the NICE guidelines on core treatments for osteoarthritis.

The objectives are to:

  • Have a clear understanding of osteoarthritis
  • Understand how osteoarthritis and condition beliefs can impact an individual’s life and behaviour
  • Be able to confidently make a diagnosis and explain osteoarthritis
  • Be able to advise on evidence based pain relief, exercise and weight management and provide good written information and signposting to other resources
  • Be aware of strategies to facilitate behaviour change and support self-management
  • Consider potential opportunities for further first contact physiotherapist skill development

EULAR & Keele Hand Osteoarthritis Training

Core elements of the 2018 EULAR recommendations for the management of hand osteoarthritis include patient information, hand exercises and information on joint health and education. However, these recommendations do not provide information about the specific type of exercises and the specific content of patient education. A group of health professionals, patient representatives, rheumatologists and researchers collaborated to produce a series of short videos for both patients and health care professionals with practical information about hand osteoarthritis. The videos cover different topics such as basic information about hand osteoarthritis, the patient’s story, instruction for exercises demonstrating of aids to be used in and around the house, and splinting.

The project was funded by EULAR and Keele University’s Impact Accelerator Unit

Online Osteoarthritis Management programmes – quick guide

This repository provides stakeholders and organisations with access to online, evidence based, international OA management programmes (OAMPs).

These were identified by the Joint Effort Initiative Implementation Group (endorsed by Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI)) as a response to the covid-19 situation. The repository provides solutions for healthcare professionals seeking to access and signpost patients with OA to remote, high-quality programmes that do not require face to face contact. It also provides healthcare practitioner resources for online training in delivering OA management programmes.

Websites

You can find out more information on the projects which have created these osteoarthritis resources.

This project was called JIGSAW-E – JIGSAW-E – Supported self-management for joint pain

And involved several European countries working together to support patients to self manage their osteoarthritis.
